ABOUT PHIL HALE
Phil Hale was born in Boston and raised in the US and East Africa. As a teenager he was apprenticed to painter Richard Berry before moving to London in 1985. His work over the next fifteen years included both fine art and commercial work, for clients including Stephen King, Playboy, Warner Brothers and Marvel. His work for Playboy and for Grant publishing won three gold awards from the Society of Illustrators. From 2000 on he concentrated on portraiture, and notable commissions includied Tony Blair for the House of Commons, Tomas Ades for The National Portrait Gallery (London), and Muttiah Muralitharin for Lords Cricket Grounds (MCC). His photographic work, often using collage, has been exhibited throughout Europe and the US. In 2014 he shot a global campaign for G-Star with Lily Cole and world chess champion Magnus Carlsen.
